What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a new injectable drug now approved for weight loss. Commonly sold under the brand names Mounjaro® or Zepbound, this new drug is classified as a GLP-1 receptor agonist or GLP-1 mimicker. It was approved by the FDA for type 2 diabetes treatment in May 2022, and has been approved for weight loss since November 2023.

How Does Tirzepatide Work?

GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs work by mimicking GLP-1, a hormone your body produces that signals satiety and reduces appetite after a meal. Tirzepatide works by targeting specific functions relating to weight loss:

  • Decreasing food intake reduces how much food is eaten
  • Increasing insulin sensitivity helping the body release insulin when blood sugar is high
  • Enhancing first and second phase insulin secretion helps the body remove excess sugar from the blood
  • Slowing gastric emptying slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach (this will lessen over time)
  • Reducing glucagon levels stops the liver from making and releasing too much sugar

Tirzepatide Dosages

Tirzepatide is currently only available by prescription in the United States. To start your process, make an appointment with our Aspen Clinic medical providers to discuss your options.
